The husband and I are both kind of on the computer-nerdy side – okay he’s a computer nerd and I just like to tinker with pictures and blogger templates. Anyhow, we’re nerds. Plain and simple. So we needed some artwork that showcased not only our love for computers, but also our love for each other. It’s very simple and can be completed in 10-20 minutes.

SUPPLIES:
  • keyboard(s) – how many you’ll need will depend on the look you want and the number of each letter you’ll need
  • canvas – or cardboard, wood, whatever you want as your base
  • pretty paper
  • modpodge
  • flathead screwdriver
  • hot glue gun

STEP 1: Get some keyboards [we always have extra/unused/broken computer parts laying around, but you can usually find keyboards for like a buck at Good Will]…

…then use a flathead screwdriver to pop the keys off.

You’ll want to keep one hand cupped around the key your prying off because it’ll go flying across the room otherwise… then your cat will run after it and bat it around until it’s lost forever under some piece of furniture…

STEP 2: Once you’ve got all of your keys popped off, it’s time to cover your canvas [or whatever you’re using] with pretty paper.

I chose a piece of scrapbook paper that was colorful, but wouldn’t be too distracting from the keys. Use modpodge to glue the paper to the canvas and then wrap it around the sides [cutting off the corners] and gluing it onto the back.

STEP 3: Layout your keys how you want them to be and use a pencil [or pen, marker, whatever you want] to mark where the keys will go.

Keyboard keys have little tube things on the back that attach them to the keyboard. Use your hot glue gun to fill these tubes with glue and then adhere them onto the canvas where you put the little marks.

Just keep doing that until you’ve got all of your keys on there, then sit back and admire your work!
