DIY Canvas Photo Transfer

June 09, 2012

1Don’t you love the look of canvas photos? Me too, but the price – yeah, not so much. Here’s a way to create a similar look for less than $10.

SUPPLIES:
  • canvas (I used an 8x8)
  • black paint
  • paint brush
  • tracing paper
  • computer & printer
  • mod podge

STEP 1: Trim the Tracing Paper
2Before I could print my picture out, I needed to trim the tracing paper to fit in my printer. I took off half an inch from the width so it would fit.
3

STEP 2: Print Picture
4
I set my printer setting to maximum quality and slowly printed my picture onto the tracing paper. When it was finished I set the paper aside for 30 minutes or so for the ink to dry.

STEP 3: Glue Picture to Canvas & Paint Edges (Optional)

5
I applied a thin layer of mod podge and laid the picture over the canvas. I very, very, very carefully pressed the picture down into the glue. If you do this, DO NOT try to smooth out any creases or wipe your finger across the picture at all! The glue seeps through the paper a bit, making the ink wet and it will smear all over the place if you’re not careful.
6
Once the glue dried on top, I folded the sides of the paper over the edge of the canvas and adhered them in place. Next, I trimmed the corners and any paper that hung over the edges. Then, to give it a clean, finished look I painted over the paper and the canvas on the edges with black craft paint.
7
And that’s it!

Le sigh, more artwork to sit around my living room while I decide whether or not it’s worth it to hang it up – we’ll probably be moving in September, but I could be moving within the next few weeks possibly… more on that later.
