This is the first Christmas in four years that I’ve had a cat to get presents for. Needless to say, I’m kind of spoiling Hugo this year. I got him a huge tub of catnip, a laser pointer, and I made four new toys for him to play with, a computer mouse, TARDIS, cactuar, and a golden snitch.
To make all four you’ll need…
- felt (green, black, blue, grey, white, and yellow)
- needle & thread (blue, black, and green – not needed for snitch)
- hot glue gun (not needed for mouse)
- catnip
- newspaper
- scissors
- Styrofoam ball (only for snitch)
TOY #1: TARDIS
1. cut two TARDIS shapes from the blue felt // 2. cut and glue the white felt to make the signs and windows // 3. use the blue thread to stitch the door and panels // 4. whip stitch three sides, stuff with cotton balls, catnip, and newspaper, then sew up the remaining side
TOY #2: FINAL FANTASY CACTUAR
The cactuar is made similar to the TARDIS, but when you get to step 6, before you finish stitching the whole thing up, cut and glue three little spikes for the top of its head. If you have trouble getting the catnip and newspaper into the arms and legs, try using a pencil to help shove it all in there.
TOY #4: COMPUTER MOUSE
The computer mouse is the most simple out of the four toys to make. Just follow the same steps as the TARDIS and cactuar (you don’t have anything to glue onto the front this time). Then in step 3 glue the cord in place before stitching the whole thing together in step 4.
TOY #4: GOLDEN SNITCH
The snitch has a very different method of being made, but it’s really easy, don’t worry!
1. cut a piece of yellow felt to fit around the ball // 2. glue the felt around the ball // 3. cut triangles on the end // 4. trim the tops of the triangles so they just reach past the center of the ball when folded over // 5.-6. fold and glue the flaps down until the whole side is covered // 7. repeat on the other side // 8. cut four wing shapes from the white felt // 9. glue two wings together back to back (if your felt is thick enough that you can’t see through the white, you can skip this step) // 10. glue wings to both sides of the ball (this step isn’t pictured, but just refer to the finished photo before the steps if you’re unsure where to glue them on)
I didn’t use any catnip with this one. Hugo will love it just because it’s round and he can roll it around on the floor.
Once they’re are finished, all that’s left to do is give them to your cat and let him/her go crazy!
Sometimes Hugo just likes to rub his face on them. Whatever makes him happy.
I love these and my daughter would love the tardis for her cat. Too cute!!

ReplyDeleteDying over the T.A.R.D.I.S. cat toy! LOVE it! My son's room is decorated in a "random nerdy sci fi/fantasy" theme and these would be such a fun little toy for him too! SO cute! It would go nicely with his amigurami David Tennant as the Doctor. (Did I mention that my son's name is Ender? Yeah...we're giant nerds.)

I LOVE your TARDIS! I'm glad I wasn't the only one with a TARDIS inspired craft over at A Diamond in the Stuff's linky party! :) Adorable cat toys - I'll have to remember this in the future when we own pets. :)
