Free Download: Mother’s Day Cards

April 30, 2013

If you’re anything like me then you might not be the best at remembering non-major holidays. So if hearing that Mother’s Day is next weekend is news to you, don’t worry, I gotcha covered with these Mother’s Day Cards.

Each card measures 4 3/4 x 5 5/8 and has a faint gray outline to make it easier to cut. After they’ve been printed and folded in half the cards will fit inside a standard A6 invitation envelope.

Bits of Home: Bookshelf Styling

Bookshelf Styling by Allons-y Kimberly

Since we ditched our cheap-o Wal Mart bookshelves after moving last year, we were in need of some new bookcases for our new place. We chose two of these shelves from IKEA. In the past I’ve just stacked things wherever they’d fit on the shelves, but this time around I really tried to go through all of our books, movies, and nerdy little knickknacks and work out ways to display them all more purposefully and beautifully.

I put together my little paper craft Avengers using Gus Santome’s awesome templates. If you haven’t seen his paper crafts yet you should definitely check them out. He has lots of other super heroes, Disney characters, and even an Adventure Time set that I’m itching to make.

My sonic screwdriver and a few of our favorite movies.

R2D2 Mickey ears from our family trip to Orlando a couple years ago, and the little Boba Fett that Andrew gave me way back when we were still dating.

My best friend made this Star Wars painting for me a couple of Christmases ago, and the Millennium Falcon was a childhood gift from my dad.

I have a whole box full of these Burger King toys that were released for Revenge of the Sith, but these were the only two that made it out of storage. Someday I’ll have space for them all…

One of our Harry Potter shelves, with the Hulk and a few good books added in.

Our second Harry Potter shelf is mine and Andrew’s favorite. The bottles, the skull, and the colors in the Harry Potter book set create a feeling of fantasy that I really like. Also, the lantern in the background is from our wedding.

And last, we have out blanket box where Hugo likes to cuddle with Fluffy.

I love how the majority of our decorations are either handmade or gifts from loved ones. Everything has its own story, represents us, and gives our home a lot of character. It’s definitely starting to feel like home around here.

Inspiration: Michelle Lesniak Franklin

April 27, 2013

Michelle Lesniak Franklin is the winner of Project Runway season 11 and one of my favorite designers to ever be on the show. She describes her aesthetic as "Pacific Northwest geek-chic" but I see a bit of steampunk in her designs as well.

Michelle Lesniak Franklin

This was my favorite piece that she made on the show. I seriously could not stop thinking about this outfit after seeing it. The ruffled, tiered skirt; The asymmetric zipper and painted train on the jacket; It’s just perfect.

Here are a few of my other favorites of Michelle’s from throughout the season:

I can’t get over this coat. And that clip on messenger bag is amazing.

Michelle Lesniak Franklin

I used to be really into fashion design and would constantly be sketching up outfit ideas, but it’s been years and years and years since I’ve designed anything. Michelle Lesniak Franklin’s edgy, steampunked, “geek chic” style may have just reignited that passion though.

Captain Bayley's Infernal Mechano-Perambulator by Broken Journalist via Flickr

Captain Bayley's Infernal Mechano-Perambulator has been making it’s way around the web this week. This steampunked AT-AT was actually an engagement present that Broken Journalist made for his fiancĂ©. You can see more photos of this beautiful beast on his Flickr photo stream.

Doctor Who Series 7 Finale Poster

The Doctor Who Series 7 Finale poster was revealed last week. I don’t really think we’ll actually learn the Doctor’s name – that seems too good to be true – but the fact that Alex Kingston will be in it is very exciting. Maybe we’re finally coming to the end of River Song’s story arc? Maybe that’s just wishful thinking, but Moffat did say in an interview with RadioTimes,

“There’s going to be a revelation. I’m not teasing. I’m not wrong-footing you – you’re about to learn something about the Doctor that you never knew before. And I think you’re in for a shock.”

So who knows? Guess we’ll just have to wait until May 18 to find out.

Dylan O'Brien to play Thomas in Maze Runner movie via Geek Tyrant

Dylan O’Brian has been cast to play Thomas in the film adaptation of The Maze Runner. Apparently he’s on Teen Wolf? I’ve never seen the show, so that means little to me, but I’m really excited about the movie. It’s set to premier on February 14, 2014. If you’re not familiar with The Maze Runner series you can read my book reviews here and here or just read the books for yourself, because it really is an amazing series.

If you haven’t heard the sad news yet, it looks like Futurama is being canceled again. Here’s some cute Futurama/Adventure Time crossover art by Spencer Duffy to help you cope.

Portfolio: AcousTalk Logos

April 25, 2013

Near the end of last year my friend Matt started a business interviewing local bands to learn about their crafts and help them get more exposure and gain more fans. He named it AcousTalk and asked me to make a logo to use in his videos.

I also made a special design for when he interviews metal bands:

A friend of mine used to have a band called The King & The Rook – you might remember me talking about them in this post or this one. He asked me to create a logo for them to use on their Facebook page a while back. Here’s what I came up with:

Jeffrey Veregge is a Native American artist from the Pacific Northwest who likes to mix the traditional styles of his heritage with his love of comic books and pop culture.

Basic RGB

I love the colors and the clean and intricate line work of his art. It’s something I haven’t really seen before and anytime an artist can represent fandoms this beautifully is a win in my book. Some of these would even make gorgeous tattoos.

Check out Veregge’s website to learn more about him and to see more of his work.

After all of the horrible, heartbreaking events that have happened over the past few days, I know I could sure use a good solid dose of happy. Here are a few things that have put a smile on my face this week – hopefully they’ll do the same for you.

This really odd, vintage photo of Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford just makes me giggle. I have no idea what’s really going on, but I’m guessing it was taken sometime before ROTJ since Luke seems so desperate to get his hands on Leia…

Doctor Who Inspired Wedding

This has to be one of the most beautiful and tastefully done Doctor Who weddings I’ve seen so far. Candice and Benjamin did such an amazing job of creating elements that were both iconic for fellow Whovians and subtle for those unfamiliar to the series.

I’m really digging these pieces by Justin Gershenson-Gates. He uses recycled watch parts to create beautiful jewelry and sculptures. You can find [ and buy ] more of his work at his Etsy shop, A Mechanical Mind.

I’m really excited about this Star Wars Rogue Squadron tank that Ashley Echstein of Her Universe shared on Facebook. Can’t wait for it to be available to buy!
