Bits of Home: Instagram Photo Collage

In the little dining area of our new apartment there’s a coat closet/pantry – kind of an odd combination, but it works for the small space. Anyway, it has these fake wooden sliding doors that take up almost the entire wall. So basically it was just a big brown square. (Sorry I don’t have any “before” pictures). You’ll soon learn, as I show you more bits of our home, that I do not like blank space on walls (or doors now I guess). So I knew I wanted to cover up the closet doors somehow. I’d seen a few “Instagram Galleries” around the blogosphere and thought that would be fun to try.

I measured the doors themselves to know how many pictures I could fit. I knew I didn’t have enough actual Instagram pictures that I liked enough to fill up the space, so I ordered the ones I liked from Printstagram and the rest are 4x6 prints from Walgreens that I cut down to 4x4s. There were 222 pictures total. I laid them out on the floor in the order I wanted before sticking them on the doors with sticky tack.

This thing was ridiculously hard for me to photograph, so please forgive the poorer than usual quality of the pictures. The giant living room window/door that’s right across from the close made it impossible to get a shot without any glare. Okay  it probably wasn’t impossible, but you know I ain’t got them photog skillz, yo…?

Anyway, here’s a slightly less awful shot – complete with empty kitchen and random plugs and cords on the wall!

It took me probably around 5 days total to finish everything.

I had to leave a square open on each door for the handles. I had planned on the handles being more centered with the photos, but apparently I don’t got them measuring skillz either.

The doors can still slide open easily to get inside the closet, although sometimes I have to push the doors back/forward (depending on which door) to make sure it doesn’t catch the corner of one of the photos and bend it.

Overall though it works great and adds some interest to an otherwise boring section of the apartment.
