My 5 Gateway Fandoms

October 02, 2014

My “List of the Week” segment is being transformed so I can participate in The Nerdy Girlie and SuperSpaceChick’s new community building project, 5 Fandom Friday – although I’ll be posting mine on Thursdays since I already have a Friday segment. This week’s topic is the 5 Fandoms that were your gateway into geekdom. Here are my picks (in no particular order):

Final Fantasy Ximage source

Final Fantasy X was my first “real” video game. I bought it with my Christmas money when I was 12 after getting a PS2 that year from my parents. I instantly fell in love with it and it remains my favorite video game to this day. It introduced me to the wide world of video games and led me to playing other RPGs and eventually into exploring other genres, like first person shooters and puzzle games.

More specifically, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, because it wasn’t until I saw the movie adaptation that I really fell in love with the series and decided to read the books. Now it’s one of my absolute favorite fandoms and introduced me to the wonderful world of YA Fiction.

Star Wars Original Trilogyimage source

My mom is a huge Star Wars fangirl so I grew up watching The Original Trilogy and I had (and still have – lets be honest) the hugest crush on Luke Skywalker. Seriously, I was dead set on marrying him when I was like five years old. The movies, the books, the games – I love it all. My admiration and fascination with science fiction definitely started with this fandom.

Teen Titansimage source

I never really cared much for super heroes or comics before Teen Titans (the animated series) came along. I’ve always had a soft spot for sidekicks so this show quickly won me over in my early teen years. After its cancelation, a void was left in my heart, so I pursued other super hero cartoons like Justice League, Batman Beyond, and Young Justice. Without Teen Titans I might never have gotten into super heroes (specifically DC) as much as I am now.

I’ve always loved Fullmetal Alchemist. I wouldn’t say it’s exactly a “gateway fandom” for me, since I never really got into anime as a whole, but it did lead me to watching a few other shows. FLCL and Case Closed (weird combo, I know) are two I can remember watching a lot of when I was younger.

This was a fun topic to write about and it made me all nostalgic since I got into most of these fandoms in my preteen and early teen years. I’m excited to see who all is participating in this new segment and to read about other geek girl’s gateway fandoms. Leave a link in the comments if you decide to play along!

  1. The first two are definitely ones I can relate to! Part of me wants to go and purchase the FFX HD remake, but then another part of me is worried that replaying it might not live up to all the amazing memories I have of it from when I was younger.

  2. GO BUY FFX HD! It is amazing and brings back all the memories! I didn't even know you were a FF fan!! Why have you never told me this!?? D:

  3. Final Fantasy X is my life... the reason I started blogging in the first place! I have played it so many times, bought the remaster and finished it and am always watching let's play videos of FFX on youtube. I can't get enough. I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT. And Harry Potter. But Final Fantasy is so special to me. :)

  4. You should definitely play the HD remake. I've been playing through it again for the first time in at least 5 years and it's just as wonderful as I remember. I'm even catching moments and silly jokes I missed the first 10+ times I played it.

The only issue I'm having is that it freezes a lot, but I think that's because I have PS3 Slim. A friend of mine had the same issue, but she was able to play it without problems on her brother's fat PS3, so I'm hoping the same will work for me. Just something to keep in mind if you have a slim, but don't let that hinder you from buying it because it's totally worth it!

  5. I'm playing through the HD remake right now and I'm absolutely loving reliving the story. I'm taking my time this run-through and being sure to do absolutely everything there is to do - all the side quests, mini games, obtaining the celestial weapons, and fighting all the arena monsters. And now with the remastered version I can fight the dark aeons too! I'm pretty stoked! But, I've been having issues with it freezing (see my response to Neri below) that have slowed me down quite bit. I'm only to my first trip to Macalania Woods and it's driving me crazy! Hopefully I can get this fixed soon!

  6. I have the slim and it works fine. the only problem I had was that when I got to Mt. Gagazet the background music wasn't playing. Once I got to the save sphere before we fight Seymour at the top I saved and restarted and the Gagazet music started playing fine. So weird!

Also yeah, I am catching a lot of jokes now too!

  7. I was also taking my time but I gave up on the lightning strikes mission... I only got to 4 dodges in a row... NO CLUE how anyone gets 200 in a row! oh and I couldn't beat the chocobo trainer so I never got Tidus' celestial weapon either. ugh those two are so frustrating!

the dark aeons are SO HARD. let me know how you do with them!

  8. Weird. Maybe it's just our system then. It freezes occasionally with a couple of other games, but never as much as it has with FFX. I can't even go 5 minutes without it stopping now. A friend offered to lend me their PS3 so hopefully it'll work on that.

  9. Ugh. Those missions are a real pain in the butt. The trick fpr the lightning is to wait by one of the craters and learn the pattern of the strikes. You can kind of just zone out everything else and get into a rhythm, but it still takes like 40 minutes. And you can't save in between or it restarts the counter which really sucks.

I have absolutely no idea how to beat 0:00 in the chococo race. The closest I ever got was 12 seconds. It's infuriating.

The only way to stand a chance against the dark aeons is to do all of the monster arena stuff so you get tons of rare items to get Break HP and Break Damage limits (if you don't have the celestial weapons) and level up your characters to max stats with 99999 HP. It will take a hella long time, but I love doing that kind of stuff so I'm excited!

  10. Okay, you guys have convinced me! I have an old fat PS3 so hopefully I won't have any problems with it.

    Bring on next pay day!

  11. Yay! I'm so excited for you. You're gonna love it!
